What is the Electronic Travel Authorisation?

The United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) is a travel authorization issued by the British government to nationals of countries who are exempt from obtaining a UK visa. It is mandatory to apply for and obtain this authorization before traveling to the United Kingdom, and is designed for visits, transit, or Creative Workers under certain conditions.

This electronic authorization is a streamlined option for eligible individuals and is a key part of the government’s effort to digitize border control by 2025. The UK ETA facilitates various travel purposes, including tourism, family visits, business, and short-term study, offering an efficient alternative to the traditional visa process.

Eligibility for the UK ETA

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is being introduced gradually for nationals of certain countries before they travel to the United Kingdom. Below is a summary of the phased rollout and countries currently required to complete an ETA before entry.

2023

November 2023

The United Kingdom began rolling out its Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) program in November 2023. The first phase included nationals of Qatar, followed by travelers from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, and Oman. This initiative aims to enhance pre-travel screening for eligible countries.

2024

February 2024

Starting February 1, 2024, nationals of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan were able to apply for a UK ETA. Travel using an ETA became effective from February 22, 2024. However, later in the year, Jordan was removed from the eligibility list due to policy changes.

2024

November 2024

On November 27, 2024, the UK extended the ETA scheme to 49 additional non-European countries. This marked a major phase of the rollout, aiming to streamline travel from a broader range of nationalities while maintaining border security.

2025

April 2025

The most recent update came in March 2025, when 34 European countries were added to the scheme. From April 2, 2025, nationals from these countries must obtain a UK ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom.
